5 Signs Your Candle Wants More Attention

1. The Flame Won’t Stop Flickering

If your flame is dancing around like it’s got somewhere to be — there’s probably a draft. I’ve learned to check for open windows, vents, even just a doorway with foot traffic. Once you move it to a calmer spot, the flame settles right down. Steady and upright is what you’re looking for.

2. Black Soot on the Jar

This one’s almost always a wick thing. If it’s too long, the flame burns hotter than it should and you get that black residue — incomplete combustion, basically. A quick trim to about 1/4 inch before each burn usually takes care of it. I keep a wick trimmer next to my candles so I don’t forget.

3. The Wax Pool Is Uneven

So this is something I had to learn the hard way — if the melt pool doesn’t reach the edges of the jar, the candle kind of “remembers” that and tunnels down the center every time after. The fix is patience. Let it burn long enough for the wax to pool all the way across, especially on the first burn. It takes a while. It’s worth it.

4. The Scent Has Disappeared

Here’s the thing I wish someone had told me sooner: your nose just… adapts. It’s called olfactory fatigue. The scent is still there — your brain just stopped registering it because it’s been in it too long. Walk out of the room for fifteen minutes, come back, and you’ll smell it again. Promise.

5. The Wick Is Mushrooming

That little carbon ball forming on the wick tip? Totally normal, especially with cotton wicks. Just let the candle cool, pinch or trim the mushroom off, and relight. The flame burns so much cleaner after.

Some things just need a little tending before they can give what they’re capable of. And honestly — the candle isn’t the only one.
